Basic Money Management

Financial literacy (FinLit) becomes more crucial as students enter their late teens, assume seasonal or full-time jobs, and become more independent. Our courses and workshops cover multiple topics to ensure students are well-prepared to make everyday financial decisions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to do the following:

    • Choose, open, and properly manage a bank account

    • Understand online banking tools and features

    • Become familiar with concepts like interest and fees

  • Students will be able to do the following:

    • Research and forecast future income streams

    • Research and forecast basic living expenses

    • Create a monthly and annual budget

    • Leverage technology to track net cash flow

    • Distinguish between needs and wants

    • Set realistic short-, intermediate-, and long-term financial goals

  • Students will be able to do the following:

    • Understand the implications of debt

    • Differentiate between types of loans, such as student loans, credit cards, and other borrowing options

    • Review interest rates and repayment schedules and strategies

    • Explain the importance of a credit score

  • Students will be able to do the following:

    • Explain the importance of emergency funds while saving for the future

    • Explore different saving options to help fund and support various goals

    • Recognize commonly used investments and investment strategies

    • Explain risk and potential investment returns

  • Students will be able to do the following:

    • Recall key tax terminology and deadlines

    • Understand the different types of taxable income, such as wages, interest, and tips

    • Grasp the concept of deductions and credits and how they impact their tax liability

    • Apply knowledge of tax forms and documentation to accurately fill out a simple tax return
